Website Ranking?

Alexa Traffic Statistics: One clue, of many...

One of the questions that website owners ask about is their ranking in the search engines. It seems a simple enough question. But, it can become a very tangled mess to explain. There is more to it than even the most seasoned "experts" propose to understand. There are no single-source answers or a widget that you can go to. No simple place to press the button and see the results. Even Google dropped their “PageRank toolbar” some time ago, because... it got complicated. But, one way to "see how you are doing" is to check your Alexa Ranking. Alexa Traffic Statistics are relatively "down-n-dirty," but they have some merit, and you can try it yourself.

This is how Alexa Traffic Statistics explains their own ranking system:

Alexa rank is a measure of website popularity. It ranks millions of websites in order of popularity, with an Alexa Rank of 1 being the most popular. Alexa Rank reveals how a website is doing relative to all other sites, which makes it a great KPI (Key Performance Indicator) for benchmarking and competitive analysis. Alexa Rank is calculated using a proprietary methodology that combines a site’s estimated traffic and visitor engagement over the past three months. Traffic and engagement are estimated from the browsing behavior of people in our global panel, which is a sample of all Internet users. Alexa Blog

That might make sense to some. For others, it's just "web-lingo." In simple form, Alexa offers a simple (and free) tool to either feel good about your website, or to anguish a little about whether you need to do something with your website.

Using Alexa Traffic Statistics

1) Go to the Alexa "site info" web page: https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo

2) Type your homepage URL in the appropriate space

3) Click "Find"

4) Enjoy the magic.

Remember, the lower your "Alexa Traffic Rank" the better it is. Also, Alexa features two distinct statistics, one for "global" and one for "country." Typically your website will include Rank in United States – which is always a nice bonus if it exists.

If you have no rank on Alexa (in either global or country), it's not the end of the world. Remember, any tool used in analytics is simply that – a tool – and it's only one of many that are used in a viable review.

It is also possible to compare your Alexa Rank against your local competitors – which is always great fun! Simply open a new browser window, and follow the "Using Alexa" instructions (above) – this time using your competitors homepage URL.

Alexa Rank is just one of many (very many) tools available for checking the general health of a website. It is not bullet-proof, but it is quick and easy.

To get a more concise sampling of how your website is doing, it is always best to rely on your own analytics. If you have not done so already – get acquainted with Google Webmasters and Google Analytics . Both are free. Your hosting company may offer similar analytics as well.

It is conceivable that you may have a small, limited-audience website, and your website is actually doing fine and accomplishing the goals that you intended it should. That is great when it does happen.

It is possible to lack "regional ranking" but to show very well in "local ranking." You may show up in the Google© 3-Pack, but be on Page Two of Google itself. Whether that is good or not, can only be put in perspective from your vantage point.

There are many pieces in the puzzle of website health and ranking. Defining "what is important" to you (and your website/business) is the first of many concerns. If you are unsure about what is important or possible, you might consider contacting or hiring a studio or agency that can offer assistance. We recommend "shopping around" before committing to any particular online marketing or SEO service. Compare "apples to apple" when inquiring what any particular agency, service or person is offering when they say “they can improve your website ranking and business.” Ask the right questions. Be sure to make notes of the answers.
